Summer 2017
Japanese Yoga is definitely different from other types of yoga. It’s not beautiful or flowing, there’s no perfect postures or spiritual chanting (nothing wrong with that but you won’t find it in a Jap class). It’s practical, effective, body and life changing mindful movement with strong breath work. You will feel amazing shifts after your first class.
Japanese Yoga harmonises our internal body to the external world. These specific movements will give you a strong sense of grounding, vitality and tension relief.
Externally we are in summer right now so internally its time for your heart and your fire element. This is when clear thinking, having a rational mind and experiencing appropriate emotional responses will allow you a joyful and happy life.
The yoga movements we use to activate the heart and fire element also release upper body tension, poor posture, strengthen lower body/core muscles and stimulate a healthy circulatory system. We find ourselves feeling more connected with others, our personal boundaries become stronger and we find speaking our truth easier.
Typical problems of an unbalanced heart or fire element are: anxiety, agitation, manic behaviour, nervous exhaustion, insomnia, palpitations, sweating, rashes, a tendency toward substance use, dull eyes and complexion, speech difficulties, feeling cut off from others, unforgiving, feeling socially awkward, blood pressure and circulation problems, sores in the mouth, tongue and lips.
Whether you have these symptoms or not, practising yoga this season will improve flexibility, core strength, fitness, mindfulness and you’ll learn breathing exercises to release tension in your busy city life.
In the meantime, you can soothe your emotional heart by practising loving kindness to yourself. Having compassion for yourself will help you to find it for others. One way to move beyond anger/pain/sadness is to remember that just like you, everyone struggles and everyone, just like you, is doing the best they can.
